Chemical Peels have been around the beauty industry for years, with so many new, more invasive exfoliation services available you may think chemical peels are a thing of the past. However, chemical exfoliation differs from physical exfoliation, chemical exfoliation can penetrate multiple layers of the dermis to create deeper effects. While physical exfoliation that you’re probably more used to seeing (i.e. scrubs, Clarisonic systems and other tools) only exfoliate the top few layers of skin and when done improperly or too frequently can lead to more breakouts, sensitivity and dryness. While both types of exfoliation serve their purpose, chemical peels offer solutions to other skin concerns beyond exfoliation.
Chemical peels come in many different variations and strengths. You should always consult with a skincare professional before getting a chemical peel to decide what strength will work best for your skin and the results you want to achieve. Some of the most popular peel types are lactic, salicylic and Jessner peels. Each of these peels utilizes a different strength of an acid. Some of these peels are known as “lunch break” peels, meaning you can get them done the same day as an event with no downtime. Other stronger peels will usually require 1-3 days of downtime for peeling, this time frame will vary from person to person.
The most gentle peel that we offer is our enzyme exfoliation, this peel is great for people with oily to combination skin that is concerned with breakouts or acne. The enzyme exfoliation has a low percentage of salicylic acid and utilizes natural fruit enzymes to help nourish and smooth the skin. This gentle peel can be done as often as once a week to keep breakouts and acne at bay. The next peel that is a step up in exfoliation is the Beta Clarity Peel, this peel contains a higher percentage of salicylic acid. The Beta Clarity chemical peel is perfect for people with oily congested skin it deeply cleanses pores with antiseptic properties. Treats oily, congested and acne-prone skin and helps rejuvenate, smooth and balance the complexion. The Beta Clarity chemical peel can be done once a month and may require 1-2 days of downtime. The most popular chemical peel is the Jessner chemical peel (or modified Jessner or Triple Transformation). This popular chemical peel uses a combination of three types of acid to improve skins tone, texture, cell turnover and fine lines. This multi-tasking Jessner chemical peel can be done quarterly and usually requires 1-3 days of downtime for peeling.
Chemical peels are a quick and effective way to help clear acne, improve skin tone, discolouration, texture, pore size and fine lines. According to the AAD (American Academy of Dermatology), acne is the number one skin condition affecting Americans, with the median age of those affected going up over the last decade. Acne is no longer just affecting teenagers, more and more adults are suffering from acne, most being around the ages of 20-27. Incorporating a monthly or quarterly peel into your skincare routine can vastly improve your skins overall health and give you the healthy youthful glow you desire.
